About Chris Gargiulo

A Brief Introduction & Bio

Chris Gargiulo teaching

A designer with experience in print, web, and motion graphic design, Chris Gargiulo currently teaches full-time within the New Media Arts program at Kapi‘olani Community College in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.

Chris's work centers around the intersection of art, design, and technology, and the effect that this union has on people and the world we live in. He is a designer and a coder. He enjoys both the right-brained visual aspects of the creative process along with the more left-brained technical aspects, such as programming.

Before moving to Hawaii and teaching at KCC, Chris taught at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Prior to teaching, he worked at various design and advertising companies from New York City to Los Angeles. His last job before becoming a full time educator was as an art director at Samsung’s advertising firm, Cheil Communications America, where he worked on online advertising for Samsung Electronics USA. His client work includes Sony, ABC, Warner Brothers, Six Flags, Hasbro, Marvel Comics, Princess Cruises, and others.

I feel fortunate to be one of those people who enjoy both the left-brained technical programming and the right-brained visual design aspects of my field.

During summer breaks, he often works as a freelance designer doing client-based work for various companies locally and internationally. His most recent projects include a promotional video for Sony and a corporate video for the Baylor-Lesotho Pediatric HIV/AIDS Children’s Center in Lesotho, Africa.

As a practicing artist, he periodically creates artwork for gallery shows and film festivals. His recent art work & shows include: Tagging (algorithmic animation), ADHD Clouds (algorithmic animation), and Google Footprints (algorithmic animation) which were on display at Koa Gallery Faculty Bienniel Shows; Digital Stasis (algorithmic animation) at the Digital Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition at Gallery ‘Iolani; Re:Create (algorithmically generated print), Urban Garden (algorithmically generated print), and H3 Google Earth (video) at Aloha Ho‘omaluhia exhibitions; Hanging in the Balance (motion graphics) at the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival; and The Interim: Intersubjectivity in Short Cinema (live action) at the Parsons Annual Animation and DV Film Festival.

Chris received his MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design and a BA in Fine Art from Amherst College. As a lifelong student, he perodically take classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in CIS (Communications & Information Science) and ICS (Information & Computer Science) with a focus on HCI (Human Computer Interaction).

When he is not on campus, he is usually at home spending time with his wife and children. His wife is a child & adolescent psychiatrist and pediatrician at Tripler Medical Center.
