Interface Design II

Intermediate Level Web & Mobile App Design

Teacher: Chris Gargiulo

Interface Design 2 is a hands-on, studio design course that covers industry standard user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design processes including researching, planning, and designing bespoke client-based websites and mobile apps. Integral to the creative design process are the deliverables and documentation commonly used by creative studios and agencies to ensure that project goals and client objectives are met. In a project-based-learning environment, students plan, design, and code two interfaces: a website during the first half of the semester and a mobile app during the second half.

For each project, students choose a client, conduct background user research, develop a content strategy, and define the information architecture by drafting the necessary conceptual planning documentation such as site maps, low-fidelity wireframes, and interactive prototypes. Students conduct a series of tests and visual explorations, including color and typography studies, and go through multiple rounds of iterative design revisions until a custom design system and bespoke, high-fidelity mockups are created that best suit the project demands. Ultimately, students end up with two UX/UI portfolio projects, one website and one mobile app, along with accompanying case studies documenting their creative design process. Students concurrently enrolled in ART 258 Interface Programming 2 will code their ART 249 websites during the second half of their ART 258 semester.
